Our history

A living history

The current church replaces the former Parish Church of Saint Chrysostom and Saint Jude Peckham, built in 1814 in Peckham Hill Street and which, in 1963, was found to have been so extensively damaged by dry rot and wood-beetle, that it had to be demolished. The current Church, consecrated on Saturday, 11 June, 1966 by Mervyn the Bishop of Southwark, stands on the site of the former parish church of the once quite separate parish, Saint Jude, Peckham, built in 1868, which was destroyed during the Second World War. The former Parish of Saint Jude, Peckham, was formally united with the Parish of Saint Chrysostom by Order in Council in 1960.

The most famous Parish Priest was Fr Potter of Peckham who was renowned for his engagement with the community. A task we continue to strive to place as a priority in our ministry.

The current building was designed by David Bush and encorporates the Figure of the crucified from the former Saint Chrysostom's and the font from stone salvaged from Saint Jude's.

More recently the church of Saint Andrew, in Glengall Road was sold by the Church of England and is now used by another Christian community. The title of Saint Andrew was then added to become Saint John with Saint Andrew, Peckham.
