Saint John Chrysostom

The Golden Tongue

Our church here is dedicated to Saint John Chrysostom one of the greatest preachers who ever lived. The nickname given to him - Chrysostom - literally means 'Golden Tongue'. He was called this because he was able to preach and teach so well.

John Chrysostom has been called "the greatest preacher in the early church". He was born in Syrian Antioch into a Christian family. His father,a civil servant, died when he was only a few years old. His widowed mother, rejected any idea of a second marriage and devoted herself to raising her two children. According to the church historian Socrates, John became disillusioned with a career as a lawyer and decided to become a monk. He was talked out of that vocation by his mother and instead John enrolled in the Christian school of Diodore.

In his sermons and writings John Chrysostom followed used a clear interpretation of scripture. He was attracted to simplicity of life.

Saint John Chrysostom was ordained as a priest in Antioch, were he served for twelve years before being made archbishop of Constantinople. His faith and preaching were renowned.

At Saint John's we try to follow his example of faith in Jesus and commitment to spread the Good News to others.
